Chough Enclosure, Bern Animal Park
Bern Animal Park, Switzerland
A clattering of choughs are the new residents of a bespoke Jakob aviary. Sporting glossy black plumages with either a yellow or red beak, choughs have a buoyant, acrobatic flight thanks to their widely spread flight feathers, making them a joy to watch. Designed to blend into its surroundings, the aviary was precisely tailored using Jakob stainless steel Webnet wire mesh. Supported by the concrete aviary entrance and pylons with hinged connections, the Webnet mesh was subdivided by Jakob Forte spiral cable systems, creating a strong, durable and weather-resistant structure.
The chough enclosure is part of the AareAlps, a mountain landscape in the animal park of Bern in Switzerland. The mountain landscape features a rocky terrain, resulting in very irregular edges that the Webnet mesh had to be fixed to in order to secure the enclosure. Jakob Rope Systems was able to plan around the rocky terrain with a precise planning process.
Jakob Rope Systems was involved in the project from the initial design and structural analysis of the Webnet mesh, enabling the team to provide precise planning and production for a rapid installation. In addition to analysing the permanent loads, such as dead loads and stressing forces, Jakob also tested snow and wind loads for the Webnet to ensure its safety in all seasons. Jakob’s digital workflow of measuring, planning and in-house production resulted in installation-ready meshes, that didn’t have to be adjusted on site.
